Walailak University Signs MoUs with Taiwan’s Leading Universities to Advance Mangrove Restoration and Academic Collaboration

Walailak University (WU) has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) and National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) at Chor Pradu Room, Walailak University Hospital. The agreements aim to promote research on mangrove restoration, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable coastal ecosystem management.

The agreement with NCHU focuses on joint research in mangrove restoration, with the MoU signed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krisanadej Jaroensutasinee, Head of the Center of Excellence for Ecoinformatics, and Prof. Dr. Hsing-Juh Lin of NCHU. Meanwhile, the collaboration with NSYSU covers researcher and student exchanges, joint academic activities, sharing of research data and materials, as well as the development of dual degree programs. The MoU was signed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mallika Jaroensutasinee, Vice President of Walailak University, and Dr. Te-Yu Liao, Dean of the College of Marine Sciences, NSYSU.

The signing ceremony took place during the International Workshop on “Mangrove and Seagrass Carbon Sink”, held from 12–15 January 2025, which aimed to foster research on blue carbon ecosystems, coastal ecosystem conservation, and the development of an international university research network.

Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, emphasized the critical role of blue carbon ecosystems in addressing climate change and highlighted that this collaboration reflects the university’s commitment to both community and global responsibility.
