Launch of the 2026 SDGs Community Engagement Initiative: “Nuclear Physics for Youth Towards Sustainable Development”

On 22 May 2026, the Physics Program, School of Science, Walailak University officially launched its 2026 community engagement initiative under the theme “Nuclear Physics for Youth To Sustainable Development”, aiming to promote nuclear science literacy among young learners while contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The activity was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Punsiri Dam-o Adamchuk and Asst. Prof. Dr. Sampart Cheedket, lecturers from the Physics Program, School of Science, Walailak University, together with Ms. Pantita Sangurai and Mr. Thanakrit Phetsong, students under the Promotion of Science and Mathematics Talented Teachers (PSMT) scholarship program in the Bachelor of Science (Physics) program.

The team conducted a special lecture entitled “Nuclear Physics and Its Applications” for 24 students from Princess Chulabhorn Science High School Trang. The activity was also attended by Miss. Apasri Chumchuen, Miss. Pitchaya Thipsri, Miss. Panisara Chairak, and Miss. Nutnicha Rodtook a teacher from the participating school.

The project aims to enhance students’ knowledge, understanding, and positive attitudes toward nuclear science and its societal applications, while aligning educational activities with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education – Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all
  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – Promoting access to reliable, sustainable, and modern energy
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Strengthening collaboration to achieve sustainable development

The project is designed in 3 phases to promote learning from classroom knowledge to real-world practice and community outreach:

Phase 1: Special Lecture Series

A lecture entitled “Nuclear Physics and Its Applications” is delivered at participating schools to provide fundamental knowledge and inspire students in nuclear science.

Phase 2: Experiential Learning and Laboratory Activities

Students participate in nuclear physics laboratory activities and educational visits at the Center for Scientific and Technological Equipment and the Radiology Department, Walailak University Hospital, where they explore practical applications of nuclear science and medical physics.

Phase 3: Community Knowledge Dissemination

Participating students are encouraged to transfer and disseminate their acquired knowledge to local communities or partner schools, extending the impact of the project beyond the classroom.

The initiative has now entered its third consecutive year, reflecting the growing collaboration among universities, schools, and local communities. The project was first launched in 2024 in collaboration with Princess Chulabhorn Science High School Nakhon Si Thammarat with support from Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (Public Organization) or TINT. In 2025, Princess Chulabhorn Science High School Trang joined the initiative, expanding the network to 2 schools. In 2026, Princess Chulabhorn Science High School Satun became the newest partner, bringing the total number of participating schools to 3

The continued expansion of the program highlights its success in creating meaningful educational impact, strengthening scientific networks, and promoting sustainable science education within society.

The upcoming activities are scheduled to take place at Princess Chulabhorn Science High School Nakhon Si Thammarat on 11 June 2026 and at Princess Chulabhorn Science High School Satun on 12 June 2026, continuing the project’s mission of advancing nuclear physics education among youth in Southern Thailand.
